ESPN is the short form for Entertainment and Sports Programming Network, it is a satellite TV channel and also global cable US-based. The owner of ESPN is ESPN Inc. which is combined venture of Hearst Corporation and The Walt Disney Company. The programs of the channel are mostly sports based which consists of talk shows and sports news, telecasts of live and recorded events and many other original programs. The network mainly broadcasts from Bristol, Connecticut. The channel do have offices in many other countries like New York City, Seattle, Los Angeles, Miami and Charlotte. The current president of ESPN is John Skipper.

ESPN was launched on 7th September, 1979. It was created by Bill Rasmussen and his son Scott after when Bill got fired from his job in 1978. The very first step of the creation was to find a suitable land for creating the building of the studio and in Bristol, Connecticut the perfect land was found where the current headquarter is located.
On 7th September, 1979, the first telecast of the marquee product of ESPN, Sports Centre was premiered. In Bristol studio in front of small number of live audience the telecast was taped and was broadcasted to about 1.4 million households of US. ESPN launched the ESPN radio in 1992, which is also the current home of many famous radio shows which includes, The Herd and Mike and Mike etc.
On 10th October, 1993, ESPN revealed ESPN2 (its sister channel) to about 10 million subscribers. This channel was made to on air the niche sports which are mainly popular with the males of age 18 to 49 years. The sports consisted of Snowboarding, World Series of Poker etc. during the 1990s, it was one of the fastest rising cable channel and is now being broadcasted to about 75 million subscribers.
Other than the live broadcast of sports, ESPN also on airs a number of sports talk, sports highlight and documentary type shows which includes; Sports Centre, Baseball tonight, Around the Horn, College Game Day, E:60, Mike and Mike in the morning, Sports Nation and many other programs.
Most of the documentary programs of ESPN are being produced from ESPN Films, which is a film division made in March 2008. From September, 2006 ESPN has united with ABC's sports division which televises the sports events on that network by the name of ESPN on ABC. Since rebranding, most of the sports events of ABC has been become limited to the secondary coverage of sports events and ESPN holds its broadcast rights.
